WHAT DOES ‘OVERPROOF’ MEAN IN RUM?
Today, ‘overproof’ rum is determined by having an alcohol content of more than 50% by volume. Historically, in the days when the Royal Navy carried rum rations aboard its ships, there were concerns about rum being spilled in the gunpowder used for the cannons and causing a misfire. To navigate this dilemma, they ensured that the rum was strong enough so that if it was spilled into the precious powder, it could still ignite. ‘Proof’ of alcohol content was determined by mixing rum with gunpowder and setting it alight. If it burned with a flame, it was proofed, if it went off with a bang, it was overproof – or so the story goes.
